Municipality of Anchorage

The unified home rule municipality that covers the geographic area from Eklutna from Portage. Includes the communities of Anchorage, Chugiak, Eagle River, Eklutna, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Rainbow, Indian, Bird Creek, Girdwood and Portage. City should refer only to an individual community; when referencing the political entity, municipality is correct.

McLaughlin Youth Center

Operated by the Department of Health and Social Services Division of Juvenile Justice, not the Department of Corrections. It is a 135-bed facility located in Anchorage. McLaughlin is acceptable on second reference.

Treat as though it did not have the punctuation; do not capitalize the word that follows unless it is a proper noun or the beginning of a new sentence. Avoid putting Live. Work. Play. at the end of the sentence in order to minimize reader confusion.

Lake Lucille

This one’s kind of a WTF. According to the Alaska Atlas & Gazetteer, the lake is properly named Lucile Lake. It is, however, commonly known as Lake Lucille, and it is home to the Best Western Lake Lucille Inn.
