setnet (fishing method)
One word in all uses. Gillnets, deployed from or near shore, with weights on the bottom and floats on the top, catch fish by the gills. Used for salmon fishing.
seine / purse seine (fishing method)
A large net with a tight mesh is used to encircle a school of fish and the bottom is drawn closed, trapping them. Often the fish are held there until a tender boat can come and transfer them aboard. Used with salmon and herring.
pot (fishing method)
A cage where crab, cod or shrimp can easily get in, but have difficulty leaving.
long line (fishing method)
