Alaska Marine Highway System

The division in the Alaska Department of Transportation that operates the Alaska State Ferries. All ferries are named for Alaska glaciers. The two that call on Kodiak are the 296-foot MV Tustumena (TUSS-too-mean-ah, Tusty is acceptable on second reference) and the 382-foot MV Kennicott. They are the only two ocean-going ferries in the system. In the summer, the Tustumena serves the Alaska Peninsula down to the Aleutian island of Unalaska. The Tusty also serves Port Lions, but the Kennicott can’t because it is too big for the dock there.
