Baranof / Baranov

Refers to Russian fur trader Alexander Baranov (1746-1819), the first governor of Russian Alaska (1799-1818). There are two ways to spell and two ways to pronounce it, and both are correct, depending on the context. To further confuse things, pronunciation is independent of spelling; it is location-based.

b’RON-off – Used in all incidences when referring to Alexander and anything bearing his name in Kodiak. When in doubt, use this.

baron-off – Used when referring to the island in Southeast where Sitka is, the hotel in Juneau and the old Peter Pan fish scow in Dillingham.

Baranov Museum – in the former Russian-American Magazin (correct) building, later known as the Erskine House. Operated by the Kodiak Historical Society.

Baranof Park – on Baranof Street. Where Kodiak High School outdoor athletics (football, track & field, and baseball) are played. An ice rink, skateboard park, playground, basketball and tennis courts are there as well. The track is named the Joe Floyd Track and Field, after a long time coach.
