Coast Guard

Acceptable on first reference for United States Coast Guard. Coast Guard Base Kodiak is the largest in the nation in area and in number of service members station here. Members are Coast Guardsmen.

Some of the commands at Kodiak Coast Guard base: Communication Station (ComSta – com-stay – acceptable on second reference), Aids to

Communication Station (ComSta – com-stay – acceptable on second reference), Aids to Navigation, Air Station, Base Support Unit (formerly Integrated Support Command), and the cutter base.

Cutters stationed here are: Munro (375’ high endurance cutter), SPAR (225’ oceangoing buoy tender) and the Alex Haley (282’ medium endurance cutter). The latter was named for the author of “Roots,” who was the Coast Guard’s first journalist. The SPAR’s name is an acronym for “Semper Paradus Always Ready,” the Coast Guard motto. Aircraft stationed here include HC130 Hercules turboprop planes, MH60 Jayhawk and HH65 Dolphin helicopters. The Dolphins, being smaller, often are deployed from cutters.
