Longlining uses a long line, called the mainline or groundline, with baited hooks attached at intervals by means of branch lines called “gangions,” short (usually 1-3 feet) lengths of heavy nylon cord which connect the hooks to the longline. The longlines are made up of “skates,” 1,800 foot lengths of groundline, which are tied together to make up the desired length for a “set.”
Hundreds or even thousands of baited hooks can hang from a single line. Longliners commonly target halibut and sablefish. Longliners can run over 2,500 handbaited hooks on a single series of connected lines many miles in length.
