There are five species of salmon native to Alaska, (and one invasive species – Atlantic – that sometimes arrive (mostly in Southeast) after escaping British Columbia fish farms).
Around Kodiak Island fishermen use purse seine nets from boats or gill nets from shore (set
netting) to harvest salmon.
chinook, also known as king
chum, also known as dog
coho, also known as silver
pink, also known as humpy — these are the main money fish for Kodiak fishermen, as
they return in the greatest abundance.
sockeye, also known as red — the second most important commercial species.
Their names are interchangeable, even in the same story, without need to explain.
